Political leaders demand withdrawal of WHT

KARACHI, Jul 29 : Leaders of political, religious and trade unions in an all parties’ conference on Wednesday strongly condemned to the decision of government for regarding withholding tax (WHT) on bank transactions and said this black tax was imposed on the dictation of International Monitory Funds (IMF) to harm the economy of Pakistan.
The conference was organized by All Pakistan Organization of Small Traders and Cottage Industries (APOSTCI) at Karachi Press Club.
Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Karachi Division leader Najam-e-Alam, Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi amir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader Aslam Ghori, Jamiat Ulema Pakistan (JUP) leader Siddique Rathore, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) leader Mir Nawaz Khan Marwat and  trade union leaders spoke.
Najam-e-Alam said it is a positive development that people are gathered to discuss their collective problems which is a sign of vibrant and alive nations.
He said load shedding is also a major issue of Karachi. He said K-E has become a curse for citizens that is restoring to artificial load shedding to maximize profit. He said K-E earns billions of rupees at the cost of Karachiites who suffer prolonged outages of power on daily basis. He said the accord of privatization of KESC is not being followed, which is grave violation of human rights of Karachiites.
Alam said the K-E had removed senior officers and staff who had got ample experience and appointed inexperienced people on low salary.
Talking about WHT, he said it seems that federal government wants to promote black money in the country. He said by imposing WHT, it would affect badly the economy of Pakistan.
He said PPP will support traders in their every movement and would raise this issue on high level.
JI leader Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman said it beyond understanding that government is pushing people to new problems every day. He said: “Our country’s budgets are made in Dubai on the dictation of IMF.”
He suggested that change should be brought in whole system and an interest-free economy be introduced. He said if public confidence in government is restored and their charities are used property then all such problems could be resolved. He also assured trade unions for their full support.
PML-N leader Mir Nawaz Khan Marwat said WHT is a collective problem and the government should resolve it. He said until strict accountability process is initiated the element of corruption would stay.
JUP leader Dr Siddique Rathore said taxpayers are forced to take to streets. He said poor people and traders are paying taxes properly but the well-to-do persons are not. He said each baby is born in Pakistan with a debt of Rs 0.1 million. He said water tanker mafia could easily get water but a common citizen is remained deprived.
Trader leaders said small traders are being punished to please the IMF. They said Karachi being a hub of economy, generates 68% of revenue but its decisions are made out of this city. They demanded of K-E to make public the details of the privatization deal.
Traders announced to observe strike on 1st August 2015 and appealed to all parties to for their support on nationwide.
