Eleven hurts as Afghan slum-dwellers clash with authorities


ISLAMABAD, Jul 30:  At least 11 people were injured as police and Rangers faced resistance during operation for demolishing an Kachi Basti in Sector I-11 of Islamabad. The action was taken on orders of Islamabad High Court. According to reports, the police resorted to teargas shelling and baton-charged when the inhabitants refused to evacuate their mud houses, leaving over a dozen people injured. The residents of the area pelted the police and CDA personnel with stones. Assistant commission Islamabad Ali Ashgar was also injured. The injured were shifted to PIMs hospital in Islamabad. The angry mob pelted police with stones, turning the area into battle field, as Capital Development Authority (CDA) personnel used bulldozers to demolish the houses in the slum area.  The deputy commission Islamabad said that they held talks with the dwellers and they agreed on demolishing the houses. However, some troublemakers resorted to violence. He said that they were implementing the high court decision and hoped that the administration would clear the area by evening.
