KTI says yes to traders’ strike

KARACHI, Aug 4: All Karachi Tajir Ittehad Chairman Atiq Mir has said that they are ready to cooperate with the government to promote tax culture in the larger interest of the nation and country but the imposing of withholding tax on bank transactions without consulting with the stakeholders is not acceptable.
Addressing a press conference at Karachi Press Club on Tuesday, he announced to observe strike on Wednesday (today) against Withholding Tax (WHT) imposed by Federal Government on bank transactions and take out rally from Numaish Chowarangi to Karachi Press Club.
He categorically said that to save traders from this withholding tax is the main part their movement. He announced they would not talk with the government representatives till withdrawing of 0.3% withholding tax on bank transactions.
He told media persons that the discussion with Federal Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on tax law reforms remained encouraging but the deadlock on the issue of WHT is still there. He said due to obstinacy of federal government, the political and economic structure of Pakistan is at the stake.
Mir asked all the business communities to be united against what he called unfair and controversial tax system. He said that it was dictation of International Monetary Fund (IMF) that the government is punishing its own people through these indirect taxes. He said the government is trying to resolve the economic issues through political ways and means which has widened the gap between the government and business communities.
He appealed to Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif to resolve this issue urgently.
