NAB tightening noose around corrupt officials

ISLAMABAD, Mr. Qamar Zaman Chaudhry, Chairman NAB chairing Executive Board Meeting (EBM) of NAB at NAB Headquarters.

ISLAMABAD, Aug 7:  The Executive Board Meeting (EBM) of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Friday decided to file a corruption reference against Ex-Secretary Health, Muhammad Jalal and others for allegedly misusing of their authority.
The other accused are Additional Secretary, Dr. Naseer Ahmad Baloch, Head of Medicine, Dr. Abdul Baqi Durrani and others.
The accused persons misused their authority which caused a loss of Rs. 10.294 million to national exchequer.
The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Chairman NAB, Qamar Zaman Chaudhry here.
The meeting also decided to authorize six inquiries and first was authorized against Israr Rauf, Ex-Member, Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Nadeem Dar, Member FATE, FBR and M/s Abbas Steel, Karachi.
In this case, the accused persons allegedly misused authority and illegal refund of Sales Tax of Rs. 80 million to M/s Abbas Steel, Karachi, causing loss of Rs. 80 million to national exchequer.
The second inquiry was authorized against Fareed Mughees Sheikh, Director M/s Colony Group of Companies (Ex-Director of Bank of Punjab).
In this case the accused person allegedly misused authority in obtaining loan from Bank of Punjab of which he was a Board Member also.
The third inquiry was authorized against Gohar Ejaz, CEO & others, Ejaz Spinning Mills Ltd & Ejaz Textiles Mills Ltd Lahore (Ex. Director of Bank of Punjab).
In this case, the accused person allegedly misused authority in obtaining loan from Bank of Punjab of which he was a Board Member as well.
The fourth inquiry was authorized against Naeem Akhtar, Director Planning & Development and Dr. Muhammad Ali, Treasurer, Federal Urdu University and Naeem Akhtar, Director Planning & Development.
In this case, the accused persons also allegedly misused their authority, violation of Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) rules and award of tenders to specific contractor without following PPRA rules, thus causing loss of Rs. 10 million to national kitty.
The fifth inquiry was authorized against authorities of National Highway Authority (NHA) and others and in this case, the accused persons allegedly misappropriated funds and undue delay in construction of Kalat-Quetta-Chaman Road (N-25).
The sixth inquiry was authorized against Directors/Guarantors of M/s Fajar Rice Mills (Pvt) Ltd, (Bank Islami Pakistan Case-Formerly KASB Bank Ltd) and in this case, the accused were alleged of willful loan default and caused loss of Rs. 39.841 million.
The EBM also decided to authorize three investigations and first was authorized against officers of State Bank of Pakistan, Farhat Saeed, Ex-Executive Director (FRM), Muhammad Bilal Chaudhry, Ex-Director Engg, Muhammad Sorab Abbasi, Ex-Chief Manager, Lahore, Abuzar Shad, Muhammad Nauman Sultan Piracha and others.
The officers of State Bank of Pakistan in this case sold out building known as SBP Staff Colony to some private persons at a throw away price, causing huge loss to national exchequer.
Similarly, the second investigation was authorized against Iftikhar Rahim, Secretary Workers Welfare Fund (WWF) for misuse of authority, officers/officials of WWF and also contractor regarding corruption and corrupt practices.
The third investigation was authorized against Prof. Khawaja Alqama, Vice Chancellor, Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU), Malik Munir Hussain, Registrar, Multan, Munir Ahmed Bhatti, Chairman BZU, Lahore Campus and others.
In this case, the accused persons allegedly misused their authority by establishing BZU Campus at Lahore without getting approval of Syndicate of BZU Multan, No Objection Certificate (NOC) from University of Punjab, Lahore and Higher Education Commission (HEC).
The meeting decided to authorize Complaint Verification (CV) against Ali Madad Shair, Ex-Minister for Education, Gilgit-Baltistan and in this case, the accused allegedly accumulated assets beyond known sources of income.
In an inquiry against Management of Universal Service Fund (USF), Ministry of Information Technology (MoIT), the EBM decided to proceed against officers and officials of USF and the Ministry as per law. The accused misused their authority for awarding contract of a campaign without completion of all codal formalities.
Moreover, in a case against officers and officials of Capital Development Authority (CDA), Islamabad and others regarding allotment of school plot to Hamid Yar Hiraj (the then MNA/Minister) in Diplomatic Enclave, Islamabad.
The EBM decided to proceed against them as per law for misusing their authority in allotment of school plot without completion of all codal formalities.
