ISLAMABAD, Aug 17: Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja took oath as new Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) here Monday. President Mamnoon Hussain administered oath to Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja. Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, all the three Services Chiefs, Chairman Senate, Chief Minister Balochistan, Federal Ministers, foreign diplomats, lawyers and other high ranking officials attended the ceremony.
Justice Khawaja succeeds Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk, who retired on Sunday (August 16). Hailing from Wazirabad, Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja began his career as lawyer in 1975.
He remained in legal practice until his appointment as a Judge of the Lahore High Court on April 21, 1999 and elevated as Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan on June 05, 2009.
Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja was part of some of the important Supreme Court’s decisions including the one which declared the November 3, 2007 steps of General Pervez Musharraf as illegal and unconstitutional.
